{"id":778,"date":"2018-09-27T14:22:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T04:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/?p=778"},"modified":"2019-03-28T14:55:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T03:55:05","slug":"life-in-the-lab-microbiology-team-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/27\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-team-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Life in the Lab &#8211; Microbiology Team Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Part of my Life in the Lab Series.<\/h1>\n<p>Here I summarise what each of my scientific roles have entailed.<\/p>\n<p>As a Microbiology Team Leader (non sterile laboratory), what does the day entail?<\/p>\n<p>08:30 hrs &#8211; Start shift<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check how everyone is going today<\/li>\n<li>Determine what needs to be done in next two months and delegate<\/li>\n<li>Spot check equipment calibration labels<\/li>\n<li>Conduct sampling of Purified Water system if short staffed<\/li>\n<li>Followup with other departments regarding on going projects<\/li>\n<li>Update documentation or delegate and meet with subject matter experts<\/li>\n<li>Check and signoff on environmental monitoring data (worksheets) or delegate<\/li>\n<li>Ensure any followup sampling has been completed, if not find out why and reschedule<\/li>\n<li>Interview prospective staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>10:30hrs &#8211; 15 minute break<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check how everyone is going<\/li>\n<li>Validation and introduction of equipment such as dust containment hoods and flammable liquid containers<\/li>\n<li>After developing, deliver special training to production, eg Microbiology for non-microbiologists<\/li>\n<li>Conduct antibiotic potency testing if short staffed (also method trouble shooting)<\/li>\n<li>Read and record viable environmental monitoring results if short staffed<\/li>\n<li>Train staff in sampling techniques or delegate<\/li>\n<li>Pursue special projects or delegate<\/li>\n<li>Sign off on environmental monitoring data<\/li>\n<li>Delegate the testing of &#8220;urgent samples&#8221; and manage expectations of requestor<\/li>\n<li>Meet with product representatives<\/li>\n<li>Schedule and chair regional meeting of microbiologists as part of information sharing and method harmonisation<\/li>\n<li>Conduct performance reviews of team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>12:30hrs &#8211; 45 minute lunch<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check how everyone is going<\/li>\n<li>Schedule or delegate external testing<\/li>\n<li>Review the regulations for gaps and improvements<\/li>\n<li>Formulate media if short staffed<\/li>\n<li>Meeting with production managers, supervisor and filling room staff as part of out of specification results investigation<\/li>\n<li>Write investigation reports<\/li>\n<li>Deliver training to team (routine and special)<\/li>\n<li>Conduct investigative monitoring or delegate<\/li>\n<li>Investigate and report on environmental monitoring trends<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>15:30hrs &#8211; 15 minute break<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check how everyone is going<\/li>\n<li>Attend site consolidation project meetings<\/li>\n<li>Conduct internal audit (about every 6 months based on schedule)<\/li>\n<li>Ensure OH&amp;S is being followed (this is a constant thing every time I enter then lab)<\/li>\n<li>Continue tasks from earlier in the day<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to yearly budget<\/li>\n<li>Catch up meeting with lab manager<\/li>\n<li>Travel to other company sites in same city for meetings<\/li>\n<li>Examine training status of team and schedule training \/ update records<\/li>\n<li>Issue updated documentation and train staff if training required<\/li>\n<li>Determine if tasks scheduled for tomorrow<\/li>\n<li>Determine if there is anything that needs the later afternoon shift or night shift to be aware of<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>17:00 &#8211; Depart for home<\/p>\n<h3>Roles Held<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/03\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-technician\/\">Microbiology Technician<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/13\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-analyst\/\">Microbiology Analyst<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/18\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-officer-aka-team-leader\/\">Senior Microbiologist aka &#8220;Microbiology Officer&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/22\/life-in-the-lab-quality-assurance-microbiologist\/\">Quality Assurance Microbiologist<\/a> &#8211; Non Sterile Microbiology Team Leader<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part of my Life in the Lab Series.
