{"id":702,"date":"2018-09-03T19:10:08","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/?p=702"},"modified":"2018-11-29T16:14:24","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T05:14:24","slug":"life-in-the-lab-microbiology-technician","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/03\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-technician\/","title":{"rendered":"Life in the Lab &#8211; Microbiology Technician"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Part of my Life in the Lab Series.<\/h1>\n<p>Here I summarise what each of my scientific roles have entailed.<\/p>\n<p>As a Microbiology Technician, what does the day entail?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>13:00hrs -Start shift<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check daily roster<\/li>\n<li>Check all validation tags on incubators, thermometers, water baths, laminar flow hoods, air samplers and anything else requiring periodic re-certification<\/li>\n<li>Check temperature charts for Water For Injection (WFI), pre-stills and anything else that has a chart<\/li>\n<li>Read previous days&#8217; environmental monitoring media (contact plates, air strips, swabs, print plates, bioburden samples, WFI samples) &#8211; record results and bring any out of limit results to the attention of supervisor<\/li>\n<li>Prepare media (contact plates, air strips, swabs) for mixing and washing room environmental monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Prepare Schott bottles for WFI \/ pre-still sampling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>14:30hrs &#8211; 15 minute break<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample WFI from mixing rooms, washing rooms, packing rooms while checking and recording temperature of water<\/li>\n<li>Return to lab and place sample bottles in fridge<\/li>\n<li>Process any room monitoring swabs returned from production after wiping down laminar flow hood with sterile wipe ad 70% IPA (monitor cleanrooms while in production if assigned task &#8211; here ensure room airlock differentials are within limits and visually inspect everything for integrity)<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and filter WFI samples<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and filter bioburden samples (in process samples taken from production, both pre and post filter)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>16:00hrs &#8211; 45 minute lunch<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitor mixing and washing rooms that I&#8217;ve decided to do today (I have a week to capture all rooms on a rotational grid basis &#8211; again ensure room airlock differentials are within limits and visually inspect everything for integrity)<\/li>\n<li>More swab processing<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and filer WFI samples<\/li>\n<li>Sample production operator&#8217;s gown and prints as part of validation and on going certification<\/li>\n<li>Start autoclave run<\/li>\n<li>More swab processing<\/li>\n<li>Determine filling schedule for tomorrow &#8211; prepare sampling forms and environmental monitoring media for the next day.\u00a0 Label everything<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>19:00hrs &#8211; 15 minute break<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place processed samples from today into the appropriate incubator at the appropriate temperature<\/li>\n<li>Place prepared media for tomorrow into fridge<\/li>\n<li>Finish off swab processing<\/li>\n<li>Close laminar flow hoods, wipe down surfaces with 70% IPA, turn off airflow and turn on UV light<\/li>\n<li>Check autoclave chart to determine if last run suitable.\u00a0 If so, transfer sterilised equipment to storage bay, begin new run if more equipment needs sterilisation<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of unused melted swab agar<\/li>\n<li>Ensure waste bins not filled past line<\/li>\n<li>Check assigned task roster to determine if any tasks remain<\/li>\n<li>Check fridge to determine if any unprocessed swabs remain (i.e. someone forgot to do their job) &#8211; process any remaining samples<\/li>\n<li>Double check everything done for the day<\/li>\n<li>Leave handover information for 7am shift<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>21:30 &#8211; Depart for home<\/p>\n<h3>Roles Held<\/h3>\n<p>Microbiology Technician &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/13\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-analyst\/\">Microbiology Analyst<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/18\/life-in-the-lab-microbiology-officer-aka-team-leader\/\">Senior Microbiologist aka &#8220;Microbiology Officer&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2018\/09\/22\/life-in-the-lab-quality-assurance-microbiologist\/\">Quality Assurance Microbiologist<\/a> &#8211; Non Sterile Microbiology Team Leader<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part of my Life in the Lab Series.
