{"id":628,"date":"2016-09-20T19:38:03","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T09:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/?p=628"},"modified":"2020-07-29T14:36:45","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T03:36:45","slug":"more-on-my-personal-style-the-administrator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2016\/09\/20\/more-on-my-personal-style-the-administrator\/","title":{"rendered":"More on my Personal Style &#8220;The Administrator&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you may have read, I&#8217;m an <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2016\/08\/27\/why-you-need-an-intj-working-with-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INTJ<\/a> (or Architect) and a <a href=\"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2016\/07\/30\/my-disc-traits-how-they-can-benefit-your-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DiSC Panther<\/a>.\u00a0 As part of recent communication with a recruiter, I&#8217;ve partaken in yet another personality test.\u00a0 This one pegs me as an Administrator.\u00a0 Keeping in mind a certain amount of salt needs to be taken with such tests as these tests are all made up and personalties are fluid.<\/p>\n<p>An Administrator is precise and reserved.\u00a0 They want to do things right and pay attention to detail.\u00a0 Had this test produced the same output as my DiSC appraisal, I\u2019d most likely have been a Driver (they want to take charge in order to succeed and win) with a smattering of Promoter (wanting to influence others and inspire them to act).\u00a0 As it is, I\u2019m, 38% Driver, 50% promoter and 100% Administrator according the latest test.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Administrators like working where there are clearly defined goals, their analytical skills are used and they are very business-like.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators can be summarised (if that is possible) as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strives to produce accurate and precise work.<\/li>\n<li>Follows directions and standards rigorously.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent at controlling quality output.<\/li>\n<li>Focuses on detail.<\/li>\n<li>Brings reality to the situation.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoys working to the guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>Always checks for accuracy.<\/li>\n<li>Will comply with management requests.<\/li>\n<li>Adheres to procedures and policies.<\/li>\n<li>Tries to avoid conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Strengths of an Administrator and how they can benefit you<\/h2>\n<p><strong><u>Strives to produce accurate and precise work \/ Always checks for accuracy <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I cringe when I\u2019ve produced a document and see there\u2019s an \u201cs\u201d missing from the end of a word, or my proof reading has missed a change of tense that autocorrect has touched. That\u2019s why I put documents I\u2019ve created aside for 24 hours before I revisit them as I tend to see what is written, not what I think is written.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to other\u2019s documents, bring out the fine tooth comb and highlighter!<\/p>\n<p>With regards to accuracy, one needs to be accurate when reporting or designing\/documenting methods as if not, sloppy outcomes result.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Follows directions and standards rigorously \/ Enjoys working to the guidelines \/ Adheres to procedures and policies<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is in direct conflict with the INTJ which supposedly loathes structure.\u00a0 As stated in that post\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I definitely loathe rules and regulations where there is no logic to why they were put in place.\u00a0 Good examples are requiring solid rear lights on cycle competitors on non-closed roads in Victoria and high visibility vests on learner motorcyclists.\u00a0 For myself, I love schedules and documenting things as quite often I\u2019ll imagine I\u2019ve done something when I have not, hence my love of scheduling and documenting.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the scientific process, I&#8217;m a stickler for the rules.\u00a0 Follow the regulations.\u00a0 Follow the guidelines.\u00a0 Follow your internal policies, standard operating procedures and operation instructions.\u00a0 Document and record what you do.\u00a0 If you missed a step, document that. Audit your processes to make sure you are following the rules and have not missed anything.\u00a0 Train your teams to ensure they follow the rules and can critically examine procedures at each use.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Excellent at controlling quality output<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enough said, really.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Brings reality to the situation<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having lead teams and delegated work, I\u2019ve gotten good at managing expectations and providing feedback on what actually can be done with the resources and timeline made available to me.<\/p>\n<p>For example, wanting a result in two days when the regulations require a seven-day incubation.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>For medium to long-term projects, the use of Gantt charts and project management principles can also provide realistic timelines and expectations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Will comply with management requests<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If management requests are fair and reasonable, then yes.\u00a0 Otherwise, I\u2019ll advise why what they ask cannot be done, or if it cannot be done by date A, why not and provide a realistic date.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Tries to avoid conflict<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In so far as I like a harmonious work environment.\u00a0 Diffusing or circumventing conflicts is the way to go, both in office politics and in the actual work tasks at hand. With regards to quality assurance, I most certainly want to avoid conflict with the regulations.<\/p>\n<h2>But what about my Weaknesses?<\/h2>\n<p><u>Demotivated by conflict:<\/u>\u00a0 Hmm.\u00a0 Not so much.\u00a0 In QA and QC roles, I am motivated by conflict as I want to eliminate it!<\/p>\n<p><u>Dislike vagueness and inaccuracy:<\/u>\u00a0 In my career, most certainly.\u00a0 Following procedures and being accuracy are required.\u00a0 At all times, I like to know they why\u2019s and how\u2019s of everything.<\/p>\n<p><u>Cold and dispassionate:<\/u>\u00a0 Here I can come across as rude or arrogant at times.\u00a0 However, I try not to be and scientists are supposed to be objective in their work anyway, so bonus points to me.<\/p>\n<p><u>Needs more awareness of feeling of others:<\/u>\u00a0 I think not.\u00a0 I am quite aware of the feeling of others. That is why I like to manage change and communicate the how\u2019s and whys, which in turn, results in a decreased chance of conflicts.\u00a0 As a team leader, I try to be fair and diplomatic.<\/p>\n<p><u>Lack of small talk:<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ll small talk where it assists my ultimate aims.\u00a0 Otherwise, no.\u00a0 I will not discuss reality TV or similar.<\/p>\n<p><u>Continually seeks detailed instructions and clearly defined responsibilities<em>: <\/em><\/u>I disagree with this. I like to develop my own instructions which tend to be detailed.\u00a0 Responsibilities are provided in internal polices and procedures, guidelines and regs and I certainly do no keep asking for such information over and over!<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>My Administrator traits can contribute to your company&#8217;s success in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I follow the regs and guidelines and enjoy doing so.<\/li>\n<li>I love documentation.<\/li>\n<li>My output is accurate and compliant.<\/li>\n<li>If ideas or demands are unrealistic, I\u2019ll tell you why and offer alternatives.<\/li>\n<li>By avoiding conflict, I ensure things run smoothly and you\/we are audit ready.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Did you find this informative or useful?
