{"id":625,"date":"2016-09-19T18:21:35","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T08:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/?p=625"},"modified":"2020-07-29T14:36:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T03:36:50","slug":"developing-a-quality-management-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2016\/09\/19\/developing-a-quality-management-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing a Quality Management System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why would anyone want a Quality Management System, or QMS?\u00a0 To quote the ISO, &#8220;It helps businesses and organisations be more efficient and improve customer satisfaction.&#8221;\u00a0 The document that details such a system is ISO 9001 (2015) Quality Management Systems.\u00a0 A large part of this ISO reads as a business plan &#8211; improve performance; sustainable development; identify opportunities \/ enhance customer satisfaction etc.\u00a0 Overall, the ISO employs the approach of Plan-Do-Check-Act and requires risk-based thinking.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From a Quality Assurance standpoint, these stand out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>align your processes so everyone in your organisation understands them.<\/li>\n<li>meet the necessary statutory and regulatory requirements.<\/li>\n<li>identify and address the risk so preventative and corrective action can be implemented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A QMS is built on the following quality management principles:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Customer focus &#8211; key to getting and keeping customers.<\/li>\n<li>Leadership &#8211; ensures everyone in your organisation knows the goals.<\/li>\n<li>Engagement of people &#8211; this includes both internal and external customers.<\/li>\n<li>Process approach &#8211; map your processes so you know what connects to what and duplication is minimised (or eliminated).<\/li>\n<li>Improvement &#8211; you may have heard of Continuous Improvement. What are we doing now?\u00a0 How can we make it better?<\/li>\n<li>Evidence based decision making &#8211; going to do something?\u00a0 Evidence of why is needed and ideally, a way to measure the outcome.<\/li>\n<li>Relationship management &#8211; expectations, allowing feedback, investigating and resolving customer complaints, communication of news\/plans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>How to Begin<\/h3>\n<p>As I like to be efficient, I&#8217;d not develop what I do not have to myself &#8211; if it has been done before and documented make use of this (either internal resources or those found online). Hence this short post!<\/p>\n<p>Assuming you have no QMS in place:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determine what you want to get out of a QMS<\/li>\n<li>Get management on board.\u00a0 They need to show leadership in this.<\/li>\n<li>Source ISO 9001, 19011, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmout.net\/downloads\/white-paper-how-to-implement-a-QMS.pdf\">white-papers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxebridge.com\/emma\/iso9001-template-kit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">templates<\/a> (not the best but a start) and nuggets of information that may be found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qualitydigest.com\/feb07\/articles\/01_article.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion papers<\/a>, blog posts, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once I know the current state of things and where we want to be, and I know what resources can be allocated, then I can set up a timeline, allocate\/schedule tasks and get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<p>Once the project&#8217;s completed and a success (as proven by the use of SMART goals determined at the start of the project), and after training&#8217;s been completed, audit everything.<\/p>\n<p>Long term, continue training, auditing and improving to ensure success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you find this informative or useful?
