{"id":1413,"date":"2026-05-19T18:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T07:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/?p=1413"},"modified":"2026-07-02T00:53:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T13:53:01","slug":"thoughts-on-training-systems-and-operational-usability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulyeatman.net.au\/index.php\/2026\/05\/19\/thoughts-on-training-systems-and-operational-usability\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Training Systems and Operational Usability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Recently I\u2019ve been involved in moving a training matrix from a spreadsheet-based system into Rapid Global.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It\u2019s been an interesting process because the platform itself had already been selected and implemented before I became involved, so rather than writing a URS and evaluating systems beforehand, the focus became understanding the capabilities of the existing platform and adapting the training framework around it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Working through that got me thinking more about training systems in general, particularly how different platforms approach competency management, reporting visibility and usability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That led me to revisit Moodle, which I originally used for similar purposes around 10 years ago and decided to reinstall this evening on my self-hosted Ubuntu server environment.<\/p>\n<p>The install itself was surprisingly quick and painless thanks to already having a well-configured server environment in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Almost immediately I could start seeing the strengths and weaknesses of each system, particularly around:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">flexibility vs simplicity<\/li>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">user experience<\/li>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">reporting visibility<\/li>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">competency tracking<\/li>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">training structure<\/li>\n<li class=\"isSelectedEnd\">administrative overhead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">One thing the experience reinforced for me is that implementing a training system is only part of the challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The bigger challenge is making the system practical and genuinely useful for the people who rely on it day to day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">One can build an impressive amount of functionality into spreadsheets with smart reporting, formulas and conditional formatting, but there\u2019s still a point where a purpose-built system becomes the better long-term solution,\u00a0 particularly for visibility, traceability and scalability.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, even the best platform still needs to integrate cleanly into real operational workflows if people are actually going to use it effectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I\u2019ve been involved in moving a training matrix from a spreadsheet-based system into Rapid Global.
